After school matters

Expanding after-school programs in your community

We understand that when the school day ends, it is critical to keep teens actively engaged in productive programs.  As always, we seek committed, caring adults and organizations within the community to share their expertise with teens through after-school programs.

Benefits for teens and communities

For Years, we have known that our programs benefit the teens we serve and the communities where they live.  While we see that our programs work by giving teens the exposure to explore different career paths and developing marketable skills like teamwork and problem-solving, a study released last year found that our programs have a measurable difference.  The Chaplin Hall Center for Children at The University of Chicago has reported that teenagers who participated in:

  • After School Matters programs for four or more semesters were nearly two and one-half times more likely to graduate than students who did not participate;
  • After School Matters apprenticeships and activities have higher school attendance and fewer course failures than teens who do not participate.

By providing teens oportunities within their own communities, we maximize existing infrastructure and help to revitalize neighborhoods.  These significant results directly affect the community because, as you know, our teens are our future.
