PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM

Because of our Alderman's hard work to pass this legislation, many of our residents who have been hardest hit by the current economic downturn will receive critical reductions in their property tax bills.

The program will provide relief of between $25 and $200 to City homeowners most affected by increases to their 2008 property tax bill for their primary residence. This program addresses the phase-out of the state law that  put a seven percent cap on the annual increase in the taxable value of home property, as well as the drop of this year's exemption under that law from $26,000 to $20,000.

The amount of tax relief the residents in our ward might receive is based on a combination of income level and the amount of their property increase. For example, the lower one's income and the higher one's property tax increase, the more relief a resident will be eligible for. Applications , instructions and helpful tools to guide you as a resident through the application process is included on a additional form.

We are currently experiencing the worst economic global recession since the Great Depression 70 years ago. in the face of great hardship, we need to do everything we can to address the challenges of our citizens. The Property tax Relief Program will provide welcome assitance during these tough times.
