A POLLING PLACE ADMINISTRATOR ?

Please contact the Board of Elections at 312-269-3253 or ppa@chicagoelections.com for more information and application deadline date for the November 4, 2008 General Election

What is a Polling Place Administrator?
Polling Place Administrators are temporary employees of the Chicago Board of Elections. They receive extensive training in the operation, set up and trouble shooting of electronic voting equipment. They are assigned to polling places, and in some cases, appear in multiple precincts. The Polling Place Administrator is not an election judge, but rather provides technical support to the polling place on Election Day.

If you would like to work in a polling place in the City of Chicago you should submit an application to serve as a Polling Place Administrator. Your training will be provided by the Chicago Board of Elections. You will be assigned to a polling place in Chicago, and you will be paid by the Chicago Board of Elections.

Who is eligible to apply?
College students who are U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age are eligible to apply.

Do I have to be a US citizen?
Yes.

Do I have to be registered to vote?
It is highly recommended that you are registered to vote in the City of Chicago, but not required. If you are not a permanent resident of Chicago, you can be registered at your permanent home address. To register, visit: http://www.chicagoelections.com/docs/City_Form275_wAddress_v2.pdf.

The voter registration deadline for the November 4, 2008 General Election is October 7, 2008.

I’ve never voted before, am I still eligible?
Yes! In fact, this is a great opportunity to be introduced to the electoral process, see how it works, become familiar with the technology you will use to vote - and perform a great service for your community all at the same time.

How much will I get paid?
If you have previously served as a PPA you will receive a stipend of $300 for attending one scheduled refresher course, picking up your PPA packet before Election Day, and serving at your assigned polling place on Election Day, November 4, 2008 from 5:00am to 10:00pm. If this is your first time serving as a PPA you will receive $500 for attending two scheduled training sessions, picking up your PPA packet before Election Day, and for serving at your assigned polling place on Election Day from 5:00am to 10:00pm. If you do not fulfill these requirements you forfeit your stipend and the opportunity to serve on Election Day.

Will I be required to attend any training sessions?
Yes. You will schedule your training session/s at the time you apply using the online application. If you have previously served as a PPA you will be required to attend one refresher course. If this is your first time serving as a PPA you are required to complete two training sessions. The trainings are 3 hours long. Full participation is mandatory.

Where are the training classes?
The trainings will be held at:
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)
828 South Wolcott
Student Center West
Basement (former bowling alley/recreation room)
Street map and campus map

What if I am late to or miss a training session?
You will NOT be permitted to reschedule your training session after you have submitted your application. If you are unable to attend your scheduled training or if you are late to a class you will forfeit your stipend and the opportunity to serve as a PPA on Election Day.

How do I know my application was submitted?
After you submit your application you will see a confirmation page. If you do not see this page your application was not submitted.

Do I get to choose which polling place I work in?
No. The Chicago Board of Elections will do their best to accommodate you in your polling place assignment by placing you in a polling place near your home address (the physical address you provide on your application). The Board must request that you be flexible in placement. These assignments will happen on a rolling basis and your assignment will depend upon your physical address, number of applicants, size of the precinct, and the discretion of the Chicago Board of Elections.

How will I be contacted about my polling place assignment?
You will receive your Polling Place assignment when you pick up your Election Day materials the week before the election. The time and location of picking up your materials will be announced in training.

How do I vote if I’m working on Election Day?
There are many options available to PPAs for voting on or before Election Day. Chicago's registered voters may use any Early Voting site in Chicago between October 14 through October 30, 2008. You may also vote absentee by mail. Only if you are assigned to work in your home precinct would you be able to vote in your home precinct on Election Day. You will not be allowed to leave the polling place you are assigned on Election Day, so if you are not assigned to your home precinct, you must use Early Voting or vote absentee in person at the Election Board or by mail.

What if I have an exam or class on Election Day?
Apply early and be sure your professor/teacher is aware that you plan on working in a polling place on Election Day. There is no guarantee or obligation for a professor to excuse your absence on Election Day, but the earlier you communicate with him or her about your plans, the better.

I can’t commit to a full day of service on Election Day. Am I still eligible to apply?
No, only students that can serve on Election Day from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. should apply to serve. If something comes up and you are unable to serve, please contact us immediately, so that the Chicago Board of Elections may assign another Polling Place Administrator to your polling place.
