9TH WARD ALD. ANTHONY BEALE RESPONDS TO SWEET HOME CHICAGO
COALITION'S ACCUSATION HE OPPOSES AFFORDABLE HOUSING

"I do not understand the Sweet Home Chicago coalition's logic in picketing my 9th Ward aldermanic office, basically accusing me of not addressing foreclosures and affordable housing.  I have worked nearly five years on renovating Altgeld Gardens, which now has the highest number of public housing units in the city.  My office has worked closely with the Neighborhood Housing Service to help keep residents in their homes and avoid foreclosures.  The coalition's proposed ordinance puts the burden for affordable housing on those South and West Side communities like mine that are already home to a disproportionate number of lower-income residents.  The ordinance could also override other pressing priorities the 9th Ward has already determined for its TIF funds.  If we are going to take a 'cookie cutter' approach to this issue, the coalition needs to make sure all communities are affected equitably."
